For more than 55 years, Pepper, Johnstone & Company has been trusted with insuring families and businesses. We partner with 60+ insurance companies so that you can consider options that provide the most appropriate protection.

Group life insurance is an employer-sponsored benefit that provides eligible employees with a financial safety net for their families in the event of death. It is generally issued through a single master contract covering a defined group of employees, with benefits commonly structured as a fixed dollar amount or a multiple of the employee’s annual salary.

Employers establish eligibility requirements and typically provide employees with a certificate of insurance rather than an individual policy. Basic coverage is often employer-paid or subsidized, and many plans allow employees to purchase additional coverage. Basic group life coverage may also be available without individual medical exams or health questionnaires.

Group life insurance is generally tied to employment and usually ends when an employee leaves the company. Some plans may offer a conversion option that allows an employee to continue with individual coverage, while other policies may not provide portability. Employees should review their plan documents to understand their options when employment ends.

Group disability insurance provides income protection when an employee becomes disabled and cannot work. Employer-sponsored plans can help replace a portion of pre-disability income, helping employees continue meeting everyday financial obligations during a period when they are unable to earn their regular salary.

Group long-term disability insurance provides income replacement for disabilities that extend beyond the period covered by short-term disability benefits. Depending on the plan, the monthly benefit under group long-term disability insurance coverage commonly replaces part of an employee’s base salary but may be capped at a maximum monthly benefit. LTD benefits under group policies may also be reduced by Social Security disability payments, workers' compensation, or other benefits. Individual policies can offer higher monthly benefit limits than employer group coverage.

Short-term disability insurance generally provides income replacement for a limited period, often no more than six months, and short-term disability coverage commonly replaces about 60% of pre-disability income during that time. Group long-term disability insurance is designed for extended illness or injury, and long-term disability coverage can continue for five years or longer depending on the policy. Together, these benefits can provide income protection across different stages of a disability. Benefits also begin after a waiting period, sometimes called an elimination period.

Voluntary benefits allow employees to purchase additional insurance or benefit coverage beyond what their employer provides as a basic benefit. Voluntary options can include group disability income insurance to help employees cover daily expenses if they cannot work. These options can complement employer-sponsored group life and disability income insurance and give employees greater flexibility to select coverage based on their individual circumstances. These choices can support a broader financial plan and help employees make better financial decisions about cost and pay protection.

An employee benefits broker can help businesses evaluate and structure benefits such as group life insurance, group disability insurance, and voluntary benefits, while helping employers coordinate short term disability insurance and long term disability insurance with sick leave and other benefits. Brokers can also help employers understand eligibility requirements, compare available coverage options, and develop a benefits program that supports both the organization and its employees. They can also review disability definitions, including own occupation standards, when someone is considered totally disabled, and how disabled employees qualify for benefits. They can also compare carrier options, including the financial strength of a life insurance company such as New York Life Insurance Company, and review ratings information like Fitch Ratings where relevant.
